“And Then” -- A Stage Play
For more than twenty years I had as a mentor the distinguished Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tad Mosel. Tad was normally reserved when commenting about my work, but I was overwhelmed by his response to this play, “Monumental. God on stage. The most devastating end of a play I’ve read since Long Day’s Journey Into Night. It’s what we strive for as writers but rarely achieve.” Tad’s comments remain the highlight of my writer’s life.

“The Scent of Fresh Leather” -- A Stage Play
I’ve had many promotions and upgraded job titles, however, my bosses couldn’t understand why I never jumped for joy. I appreciated the acknowledgment, but I never felt the urge to celebrate -- I was hired to do a job and a fair paycheck was recognition enough for me. I once witnessed something that puzzles me to this day. It was annual review week for the senior creative people -- a woefully underpaid copywriter that worked endless hours for the company went into the boss’ office and bounded out joyfully, “They love me! They love me! I didn’t get a raise but they’re going to carpet my office!”

“& Sons” -- A Stage Play
It was nice writing for The Cosby Show -- being part of a fantasy world where Dad’s always funny, always kind, always loving. Like many viewers I often found myself saying, “Too bad it wasn’t like that around my house.” Maybe I had some leftover angst from my childhood -- maybe I just wanted to let off steam about the consequences of bad fathering. This play is an attempt to take the audience on a roller-coaster ride under the skin of the irrevocably damaged.

“Him And His Last Night Of Sanity” -- A Stage Play
I opened my veins when I wrote this intense one-man play -- however, it was the fine actor John Monteleone who bled on stage -- I was encouraged by agents to perform my solo piece -- but I chose instead to hide cowardly in the back of the theatre -- on opening night I was a bit surprised to see in the audience a man I knew named Lee Friedman -- I was shocked to see Lee in the audience a week later, then again the following week, and once more on closing night. Lee Friedman had been a phenomenally successful marketer -- he’d made fortunes with the likes of fashion designer Betsey Johnson, super rock group KISS, workout legend Jane Fonda -- hmm, I thought, does Lee Friedman see something huge in this quirky play about a man on the edge of madness -- unfortunately, I never found out -- Lee Friedman died soon after -- a huge loss of a wise, talented man -- someone who saw something in this play that I wonder about to this day.
