From NBC, ABC, CBS To YouTube -- My Journey Into The Future Of Television

By Gary Kott on Feb 26, 2011 at 04:00 AM in in Blogs

For years I wrote and produced in Hollywood -- every network, every studio many times over -- contributed to one of the biggest hits in the history of television -- worked with iconic superstars, famous directors, masterful technicians -- it was impossible back then to foresee that one day there would be a new broadcast medium that would threaten the existence of all that came before -- enter the internet and a phenomenon called YouTube -- crudely produced home videos -- silly concepts -- mostly embarrassing end products -- I’d never guess that one day I would count myself a proud member of the amateurish YouTube family -- it started when I decided several weeks ago to create my own website -- Gary Kott’s Creative Warehouse -- a showcase for my American Folk Art, Stories, and Plays -- a few days ago a new, young friend, Michael Slate, called and said, “I’d like to shoot some of your artwork and put it on YouTube.” -- leery about cinematic improvisation I whipped together a light-hearted script -- using nothing more than cell-phone technology, Michael panned and zoomed a few takes, went home, fiddled with the sound, and, presto, our “film” was on air -- no superstars, no famous directors, no masterful technicians -- no NBC, ABC, CBS -- pure YouTube -- crude, silly, mostly embarrassing -- but fun -- fast -- and hopefully entertaining -- go to YouTube and enter “Gary Kott” -- have a look -- then hop over to the website -- http://www.garykottscreativewarehouse.com
